Sunderland fan who pushed Newcastle’s Steve Harper over tries to apologise in person
The Sunderland supporter who is alleged to have run onto the Stadium of Light pitch and barged over Newcastle keeper Steve Harper in the wake of Asamoah Gyan’s last-gasp equaliser in the Tyne-Wear derby presented himself at the Magpies’ training ground today to apologise.
The 17-year-old was accompanied by his “mortified” father, Mirror Football reports.
The youth was held by Northumbria police last night after being handed in by fellow Mackems at the ground. He was released on police bail until March, and one of his first acts after being bailed was to say sorry.
A Newcastle insider said a face-to-face apology was not possible because Harper was not in training today.
The source said: “His intention was to apologise to the manager, the club and to Harper. He sat down with a club official and he could not have been more humble and full of remorse.”
Sunderland and Harper himself have praised Black Cats supporters who detained the alleged attacker until police could arrest him.
