Gloves off, headguard still on

Cristian Chivu punched Bari’s Marco Rossi during last night’s 3-0 victory for Inter Milan. The Romanian ‘hardman’ thumped Rossi on the back of the head from behind, all the while under the protection of his safety headgear.

The match officials missed the incident and Chivu stayed on the pitch, but Bari’s players and the TV cameras saw it. The scenes got so ugly that Inter goalkeeper Julio Cesar was forced to cut short a skiing trip to ensure Chivu stayed out of trouble.

After the match Chivu apologised to Rossi.

He said: “It is difficult to explain. I am here because I want to apologise to Rossi, with all the dignity that I have left.

“I apologise to everyone, above all my two children who one day will watch this clip.”

If that’s the case, you would have to assume that Mark Van Bommel’s kids will need a significant amount of therapy.
