Cup final clanger
Moments like this always bring that Ruud Gullit quote to mind: “A goalkeeper is only a goalkeeper because he can’t play football.”
Queen of the South goalie David Hutton did his profession a disservice with this disastrous attempt at a dribble during his side’s 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Alba Challenge Cup final.
The beneficiary was Ross Country striker Andrew Barrowman. He said: “The ball was played back to the keeper and I chased it in. I’ve done that 100 times this season and this is the only one that has come off for me. With the state of the pitch I was still panicking and thinking I might miss – that’s why I ran it right over the goal line to finish it.”
Now, if a striker is worried about missing an open goal from six yards because of the pitch it is probably a safe indicator that the keeper shouldn’t really have been dribbling anywhere.
Queen of the South manager Kenny Brannigan is inclined to agree with us. He said: “I don’t know what the goalkeeper David Hutton was thinking. You just clear your lines. The boy’s not done himself any justice today.”
On a separate issue aimed at anyone who speaks Gaelic, do channels like BBC Alba get decent commentators and summarisers for a match like this or do they just have to find someone who speaks the lingo?
