Top 10 memorable Paul Scholes moments
Paul Scholes: he scored goals. Following the Manchester United legend’s retirement, OTP revisits some moments of his career that stick in our mind.
1. Goal against Panathanaikos
A perfectly Scholes-esque goal. He is involved a few times in the build-up, spreading the play in both directions, and he’s also on hand to provide a beautifully deft finish.
2. Goal against Bradford
An eye-catching example of Class of ’92 telepathy. A technically brilliant volley made to look easy.
3. Snogging Gary Neville
Just like the Bradford goal, another excellent example of just how close the Class of ’92 became.
4. Goal against Tunisia
When World Cups at least got off to decent starts for England…
5. The Hand of God
The least subtle deliberate handball of all time and a red card to go with it!
6. Ridiculous air-kick/stunning cross-legged finish against AC Milan
Even when he got it completely wrong, it still ended up being class.
7. Flicked assist against AC Milan
Putting it on a plate for Wayne Rooney. Just an example of some of his incredible assists.
8. Piledriver against Barcelona
Barca’s midfield are famously big fans of Scholes. He gave them a close-up masterclass in 2008.
9. Red card against Sweden
Scholes became the first England player to be sent-off at Wembley for two bookable offences against Sweden in 1999. As this video shows, he was lucky to be on the pitch long enough to pick up the second yellow.
10. Red card against Manchester City
One more from the horror tackle collection. This turned out to be his final red card. The horrendous challenge on Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta in the FA Cup semi-final.
