Manchester United legend Eric Cantona to run for French presidency
Eric Cantona has revealed he wants to become the next president of France.
The 45-year-old has launched a campaign to secure his place in the running for this year’s presidential election. He is trying to secure the 500 signatures he needs to run.
He has written to France’s mayors seeking their support on a mandate of improving opportunities for young people.
He wrote: “This engagement obliges me to speak, more earnestly than usual, but also with a keen sense of my responsibility, at a time when our country faces difficult choices which will be decisive for its future.”
If Cantona receives the 500 signatures by the end of February he will go into the first round of the election, which will be held in late April. The top two candidates from that round of voting will then go head-to-head for the presidency in May.
