What could possibly go wrong? Nicolas Anelka named manager of Shanghai Shenhua

He was nicknamed Le Sulk, caused unrest in the Chelsea squad and was sent home from the French World Cup squad in disgrace, so you might think that Nicolas Anelka isn’t exactly ideal material to take over as a manager.

But he has.

Replacing fellow countryman Jean Tigana at Chhinese club Shanghai Shenhua FC, who has negotiated a leaving fee, Anelka has taken charge of his first training session as player-manager of the club. We suspect Anelka will be starting most games.

Given that only one other player in the squad is French, and Anelka doesn’t speak Chinese, we can only imagine that there are going to be feathers flying.

Shanghai sit in mid table after winning just one of their opening five matches.

I give it three months.
