Arsenal youngster Alex Oxlade Chamberlain in England squad on basis of performance against two players he didn’t play against
England manager Roy Hodgson said Alex Oxlade Chamberlain made his Euro 2012 squad after impressing with his midfield performance against Massimo Ambrosini and Andrea Pirlo – but the Ox didn’t face either player.
While AOC’s stunning performance against AC Milan won him many plaudits, Hodgson saw him up against a different midfield than everyone else.
Explaining his selection, Hodgson said: “I was very impressed with how he coped with Ambrosini and Pirlo in the middle against Milan.”
Unfortunately, Ambrosini was suspended for the match and did not feature against Arsenal. Pirlo, meanwhile, plays for Juventus…
