Although Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has refused to give interviews in English during Euro 2012, that hasn’t stopped him from providing the quote of the tournament so far.

Speaking in front of the Italian press, the mesmerising maverick swerved from a rather touching sentiment, to a reference that left Italian boss Cesare Prandelli and journalists totally bamboozled.

Mario said: “Even as a child I was moved about wearing the Italy shirt, but this has not affected me in these European Championships.

“I’ve never had problems off the pitch, not even when I didn’t score. I didn’t have as some journalist put it ‘my arse in the nutella’.”

Your guess at making sense of that remarkable last line is good as ours, but we think it might be a reference to a goal-shy player crapping himself about where his next scoring strike will come from.

Or indeed, he might be more literally stating that his pranks have been trivial and never approached something as malicious as sabotaging his team’s favourite chocolate spread.

While we don’t really want the Italian striker to be on the scoresheet tonight, we would potentially welcome it if, and only if, he works a jar of nutella in to the ensuing celebration.

Chocolate history beckons.
