David Beckham has been left out of the Team GB squad to compete at London 2012.
The LA Galaxy man didn’t manage to convince manager Stuart Pearce that he deserved a place in the squad. Pearce had visited the USA to check on Beckham’s fitness and form.
Manchester United veteran Ryan Giggs, Liverpool and Wales striker Craig Bellamy and Manchester City defender Micah Richards are believed to be the three overage players selected in Pearce’s final 18-man squad.
In a statement, Beckham said: “Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me so I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team GB squad.
“Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold.”
Beckham, aged 37, was expected to be given a berth in the squad having helped to secure the Games for London in 2005.
