Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas tucked away the winning penalty in last night’s Euro 2012 semi-final against Portugal – but not before seeking some reassurances from the ball.

The Barcelona man went to the trouble of talking to the ball before taking his spot-kick, urging it to “make history” and not let him down.

He told the BBC: “We had to make history. I had a funny feeling about the penalties and I was thinking about them this afternoon. They told me initially to take the second one but I said ‘no, give me the fifth’ as I had this premonition.

“When I stepped up to take the penalty I said to the ball that we had to make history and it shouldn’t let me down. I talked to the ball four years ago [when he scored the winning penalty against Italy in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008] and it didn’t let me down.”

And given the success of his ball whispering, we’ll expect him to be delivering a tedious monologue throughout Sunday’s final.
