Portsmouth FC’s official website reveals a 2012/2013 squad of just five players
It would be funny if it didn’t make for such desperate viewing. The above image from Portsmouth FC’s official website isn’t a playful spin-off of the Guess Who board game, but in fact the entire contents of Pompey’s first team.
The League One outfit has haemorrhaged players this summer after accepting that the club can only avoid closure if it detonates its bloated wage bill with immediate effect.
Tal Ben Haim’s presence on the five-a-side squad will make particularly irritating viewing for Portsmouth fans – the Israeli defender is still sat on a £36,000-a-week pay packet. His continued stay at the club makes as much business sense for both parties as opening up a drive-through fast food restaurant in the Sahara Desert.
The other dollop of depression is that even if the team do limbo out of administration in the coming months, they will be starting the 2012/2013 season with a 10-point penalty. Whatever the case, it seems inevitable that the club will remain a one-way revolving door for the foreseeable future.
In a rather unfortunate piece of advertisement placing, the club have inadvertently rammed home that message by uploading an employment solicitor’s contact details on their homepage – all served up with a painfully inappropriate headline, Dismissal Portsmouth.
Forget Play Up Pompey, just stay alive Pompey will suffice for the Fratton Park faithful this season.
