Tony Hibbert scores, Everton fans riot
Everton stalwart Tony Hibbert has played more than 300 games for the club, but has never scored a goal.
The right-back’s legendary goal-shyness led to chants and banners of “If Hibbert Scores, We Riot” around Goodison Park for the last few seasons.
But Hibbert finally broke his duck as he prepared to start his 13th season at Everton.
With an outstanding sense of occasion, the 31-year-old fired in a free-kick at his testimonial match against AEK Athens last night. That’s impressive. Even hardened goalscorers sometimes have to resort to the 85th minute dubious penalty to find the net on their big night. There was no such staging for Hibbert.
Toffees stayed true to their word and indulged in a bit of rioting. But few could muster the enthusiasm for a full-scale riot at a pre-season friendly. After a pitch invasion, the fans filed back to their seats after being asked nicely by the stadium announcer.
Now they’re just waiting for a goal in a competitive match for the terrace favourite!
