Daily Telegraph’s Henry Winter swims across the Tyne river

The problem about social media is that everything you say is documented, something that came back to haunt Henry Winter recently.
Criticising Mike Ashley upon the appointment of Alan Pardew, The Daily Telegraph Chief Football Writer stated that he would swim across the Tyne if a long-term commitment was ever given to Pardew by the Newcastle owner.
Unfortunately for Winter, Pardew was handed an eight-year-deal by the club, and there aren’t many more ‘long-term commitments’ than that.
In fairness to Winter, he showed himself to be a very good sport with the following tweet:
I honour my bets. I promised to swim the Tyne if Ashley showed long-term loyalty to Pardew. He has, fair play, so time for dip in Tyne…
Winter also raised a large sum of money for the Bobby Robson Foudation by getting sponsorship for his little swim, so fair play to the man for that.
