‘Chelsea take take the lead’ – side-netting makes Clive Tyldesley sound like an idiot
Ordinarily, ITV commentator Clive Tyldesley doesn’t need any help to sound like an idiot. But during last night’s Champions League match between Juventus and Chelsea he was aided and abetted by the side-netting.
Every weekend, fans ‘on the other side of the ground’ up and down the country are conned into believing their side has taken the lead by the rippling of the net only to discover that the ball has actually hit the outside of the goal. Commentators tend not to fall into the trap, but Tyldesley was caught hook, line and sinker yesterday.
“Chelsea take the lead,” he bellowed. It had barely left his mouth before he had to start rowing backwards.
