Former Leeds United player Robbie Rogers comes out and retires
Huge respect this weekend should go to American international footballer Robbie Rogers.
The former Leeds United and Stevenage player yesterday used his blog to reveal that he was gay and would be stepping away from the game:
“For the past 25 years I have been afraid to show who I really was because of fear. Try explaining to your loved ones after 25 years that you are gay. Try convincing yourself that your creator has the most wonderful purpose for you even though you were taught differently. My secret is gone, I am a free man, I can move on and live my life.”
Exactly what football needs, someone to step forward and stop the madness of footballers having to hide their sexuality.
The reaction on Twitter also gave some semblance of faith in humanity. Rogers received an incredible amount of support from both former team mates and general well-wishers.
