Who Are Ya? Jesus Navas (Manchester City)
Your whistle-stop guide to the latest Premier League arrivals
Name: Jesus Navas
Position: Right winger
Signed from: Sevilla
Did you know?
Navas has previously turned down moves away from Sevilla, including a transfer to Chelsea, because of chronic homesickness. The Spain international has spent his entire career at the club, which is 20 miles north of his hometown.
He used to suffer anxiety attacks during extended periods away from home and has regularly flown home from training camps. He believes counselling has now got his homesickness under control.
What’s the deal?
Navas has long been linked with a move to the Premier League, but the aforementioned homesickness has previously prevented that. He is yet to pass his medical and details of his contract have not yet been announced.
New City manager in waiting Manuel Pellegrino will be hoping the Spaniard brings the attacking thrust Roberto Mancini’s lacked last season. The Chilean rarely plays with wingers, so it seems likely that he intends to convert Navas into a more central role or that City have decided not to consult their manager on transfers for another summer.
What do they say?
“It’s a good project and it was the moment to make the step. It was my choice. I’m very happy with the decision.”
“Navas wants to continue his successful sporting career in English football, more precisely at a club at which he can continue to develop as a footballer, as he has publicly stated on various occasions in recent months.”
