Tahiti score against Nigeria in FIFA Confederations Cup – Unbridled joy ensues
Using the word ‘minnow’ to describe Tahiti’s participation in FIFA’s Confederation Cup doesn’t even come close to describe their status. This is a country that had one professional player and lost their last fixture to New Caledonia.
And, for large periods of their opening match against Nigeria, that showed. Time and time again they were carved open by their opponents, and in truth Nigeria were guilty of trying to walk the ball in, failing in an attempt to round the goalkeeper on numerous occasions.
But, during the second half, it happened. A corner was played in from the left-hand side, and Jonathan Tehau headed home past a rather woeful goalkeeping effort.
It was unbridled joy. The player ran off in a Paolo Rossi fashion, before his team-mates performed a ‘canoeing’ celebration mime. Meanwhile, the coach was running around with arms aloft, not quite sure what to do with himself.
