Guus Hiddink quits Anzhi, tipped to become Barcelona manager
Guud Hiddink is set to become the new Barcelona manager after resigning from his post with Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala.
Anzhi announced that the former Chelsea boss has stepped down with immediate effect on their website this afternoon.
In a statement released by the Russian club, Hiddink said: “This decision was not easy to me, but I’ve always said that my mission may end when the club will be able to develop and grow on itself, without my participation.
“Now it’s time has come. I am convinced that the club has a great future, and I’m glad I was part of this large-scale project of football.”
That’s despite the fact that he signed a one-year contract extension just last month, prompting many bookmakers to suspend betting on the ex-Holland coach taking over from Tito Vilanova at Camp Nou.
Vilanova announced he was leaving the role last week after learning that he had suffered a cancer relapse.
