Brendan Rodgers knew Pepe Reina would be leaving Liverpool ‘from last season’
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has indicated it was well-known among the club’s hierarchy that goalkeeper Pepe Reina would leave the club this summer.
Reina has joined former Reds boss Rafa Benitez at Napoli on a season-long loan deal.
And Rodgers’ determination to bring Simon Mignolet in from Sunderland makes even more sense in light of his latest revelations.
Rodgers said: “From last season, really, as a manager I was led to believe that we were going to get an offer for Pepe that would probably see him leave the club.
“It’s decided he will go to Napoli and we’ve got two very good goalkeepers still at the football club. We’ll review it after the loan finishes.”
The Spaniard is on a huge £110,000-a-week deal at Anfield, and it is believed the Reds were quite keen to shift him off the wage bill.
