Mark Bosnich has been explaining why he made a Nazi salute towards Spurs fans during his Aston Villa days – and he reckons the sitcom Fawlty Towers is to blame.

Speaking at a charity event, he said he was mimicking the actions of John Cleese’s character Basil Fawlty, and did not realise that the prank would be misconstrued based on Spurs’ Jewish connections.

The incident happened during a Premier League match at White Hart Lane in 1996. Shortly afterwards, the Australian goalkeeper apologised for the incident and said it was down to ignorance.

At the time, he said: “To be honest, I’m a bit distraught… I’d just like to say that it was something done out of ignorance. For me it was a real joke, but it’s been taken so much out of proportion and I’m so, so sorry. I know the Spurs fans have lost people in the war, but I also lost people in the war.”
