Papiss Cisse has been explaining his decision to back down in his row over Newcastle’s shirt sponsorship deal with Wonga.

The Senegal international refused to wear the logo of the payday loan company, saying it was against his faith as a Muslim.

But after talking to those close to him – including Islamic teachers – the number 9 decided he will be able to wear the shirt this season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “It has been a very difficult time for me and the club, and also for the fans.

“I have had some useful discussions with my club, my family and Islamic teachers in the last few weeks. After a huge amount of thought and reflection I have made the decision to follow my teammates and wear the kit.

“Now I think it is important for the team and the fans that we concentrate 100 per cent on football.”
