Will Xabi Alonso’s injury scupper Man Utd’s attempts to sign Luka Modric?
Manchester United are planning to sign Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modric – but their plans could be thwarted by an injury to former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso.
There seems to be consensus across various media outlets that United will move for Modric once Real complete the signing of Gareth Bale.
But the plan to sit tight could backfire after Alonso damaged a metatarsal in training yesterday. With the Spain international sidelined for around three months, Real might decide that they cannot afford to lose Modric as well.
United were confident the Spanish giants would allow the Croatian star, who joined from Spurs last summer, to leave having signed fellow midfielders Isco and Asier Illarramendi this summer. Alonso’s injury could convince Real to err on the side of caution.
The Manchester Evening News reports that United are interested in both Modric and fellow Real playmaker Mesut Ozil. The chances of both being allowed to leave seems pretty slim.
Germany international Ozil was a more influential figure in Real’s side last season and would probably command a higher fee than Modric.
Rumours of a £40m asking price for him might convince David Moyes that Modric is the better option.
