Manchester United manager David Moyes is considering a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke in January.
The Scot watched the 22-year-old in action during Friday’s match between Belgium and Scotland. reports the Daily Mirror.
Now he is considering bringing in the Belgian to become United’s new number 9.
Moyes knows he may have to part company with Wayne Rooney next summer if the England forward is still determined to leave the club. By that stage he will have just 12 months to run on his contract and the champions would risk losing him on a free transfer the following year.
Robin Van Persie is still very much trusted to lead the line, but the Dutchman is now the wrong side of 30 and Moyes wants to line-up some contingency plans.
Benteke was widely linked with a move to one of the Premier League’s bigger teams over the summer – though mainly Spurs, Chelsea and Arsenal rather than United – before Villa boss Paul Lambert convinced him to stay and sign a new £60,000-a-week deal in July.
