Stan Kroenke: ‘Nothing would be cooler than Arsenal winning the title’
Arsenal owner Stan Kroenke has set his sights on seeing his side winning the Premier League while he’s still around to see it.
The 66-year-old tycoon said it would be cool if Arsene Wenger’s side could win the title.
He said: “There would be nothing cooler, I’ve never experienced it over here, to win the championship of the Premier League. Some of my American cohorts have experienced that and we haven’t been able to.
“I’m not getting any younger. It’s something I would like to achieve. There would be nothing more thrilling than to win a championship.”
Kroenke has been criticised by Gooners over their club’s lack of spending, but the American says his only mistake has been not giving involved in more aspects of running the club sooner.
He added: “We are here. We like being here.
“We have a lot of money invested in Arsenal. We put our head on the line so to speak. My only mistake was to not get involved sooner on a few levels.”
Kroenke also opened up over the club’s £42.4m record signing of Mesut Ozil.
He insisted that bringing in the Germany international was a calculating move, and not a case of spending money to appease supporters.
He continued: “We weren’t there to make a statement. It’s absolutely not done for that. It was done purely because our manager views him as worth that money, he sees him as a player to help us compete and that meant we were happy to pay it.”
“We stayed in close touch as we went through the process. Everyone wanted to get him, other teams wanted to get him and to get him here is fantastic.”
“What a great player. You can judge a lot by what players say when they leave and they weren’t happy when he left. Everything, from the way he conducted himself, since he’s been here has been top flight. We’re thrilled to have him.”
Arsene Wenger also received strong backing from Kroenke. The manager will be not be forced to spend money on players, Kroenke said:
He explained: “I really enjoy Arsene – very smart, very intelligent. He has an absolute view on how he runs that team and the club. He has earned that right. Don’t look for me to interfere with that. I have learnt over the years that sometimes owners try do that and it is not so good.”
“We’ve always said that there are resources available. There are guys who say that we should push Arsène harder to spend. That’s fair enough – there are always lots of opinions but Arsène is an independent thinker and planner. He works very hard at it and has a wonderful record. He was trained in economics, my undergraduate study was in economics.”
