Willian had already signed Spurs contract before deciding to join Chelsea
It was already apparent that Willian had come pretty close to joining Spurs before deciding his future lay with Chelsea. But today it’s emerged that he had actually signed for Andre Villas Boas’ team.
The Brazil international had signed a contract at White Hart Lane before his “change of heart”, according to reports in The Times.
It was commonly known that the 25-year-old had undergone a medical and was on the verge of completing his move to Spurs.
Today’s revelations suggest that the player backed out when he realised Chelsea were also interested.
It would be interesting to know how legally binding the paperwork he signed was, and whether Daniel Levy and co decided that it was better to let the former Anzhi player walk away than force him to stay when he wanted to be elsewhere.
Willian is set to play against the other club he signed for this summer when Chelsea meet Spurs in today’s lunchtime kick-off.
