Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has hinted he will seek a transfer this summer if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League.

The Belgian centre-back narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification in his first season in English football, and now looks destined to miss out this year too.

Spurs are now six points adrift of fourth-placed Liverpool and Vertonghen has made it clear he wants to be in the Champions League next season.

He said: “Those are always difficult questions. What I want is to play in the Champions League with Tottenham, so, hopefully, I will get there this year.

“I don’t complain about anything. Let’s see after the end of the season and after the World Cup.”

Speaking after yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Norwich gave Tim Sherwood’s side an uphill battle to finish in the top four, Vertonghen added: “For me, the Norwich game was just not good enough and we need to raise up our game to compete with the other top teams.”

Vertonghen has been linked with moves to Barcelona or Manchester City in recent weeks.
