Manchester City are reportedly on the verge of signing Frank Lampard on loan.

The former Chelsea midfielder, who was released at the end of last season, was recently unveiled at City’s new MLS franchise New York City.

But the franchise only joins the MLS when the 2015 starts in March meaning Lampard, aged 36, would be without football for the first half of the English season.

City are taking the opportunity to sign the England international, meaning Lampard could now play against Chelsea when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium on September 21 having spent 13 years at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard would probably join City on loan until mid-January. City have declined to comment, but Lampard could be training with his new team-mates as early as next week, claims the BBC.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini is reportedly keen to assess the veteran star’s fitness.

He is likely to be registered for the Champions League squad to help City fulfil their homegrown player quota.

Lampard signed a two-year contract with New York City when he officially joined them last month.
