Paddy McNair retains his first-team place for Man Utd vs Everton
Manchester United rookie Paddy McNair will keep his place in the team for Sunday’s game against Everton, manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed.
Phil Jones is not yet fit enough to feature against the Toffees, which means McNair – and fellow youngster Tom Thorpe – remain the only right-footed centre-backs at Van Gaal’s disposal.
Having given 19-year-old Northern Irishman McNair his debut against West Ham last week, the Dutchman has stayed true to his assertion that he would not play three left-footers in the back-four.
Van Gaal said: “He’s the only one who can play in the right-sided defensive position. He played very well.
“For a player like him it’s very difficult to maintain that level. That is his biggest challenge.”
That means that Tyler Blackett, back from suspension, must compete with Marcos Rojo to partner McNair.
McNair was praised by Van Gaal and captain Wayne Rooney for his performance against the Hammers.
