Liverpool target Maxi Pereira set to become a free agent
Liverpool transfer target Maxi Pereira is likely to be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.
The 30-year-old right-back was linked with the Reds in the summer. At that stage, Portuguese champions Benfica were reportedly demanding a £5.5m fee for him.
But the Uruguay international is out of contract at the end of the season.
Although extending his stay at the Estadio da Luz remains an option, negotiations have not yet started, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola.
The report suggests that Pereira’s agent Paco Casal is now putting plans in place in case Benfica continue to drag their heels over his client’s renewal.
Pereira would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with Liverpool or any other overseas clubs from January.
Given that 30-year-old Glen Johnson looks set to leave Anfield at the end of his own contract next summer, bringing in Pereira would give Brendan Rodgers a right-back of similar experience on a fraction of the wages while youngster Javier Manquillo continues to develop..
