Southampton are bracing themselves for a bid from Liverpool for England star Nathaniel Clyne – with the south coast club set to offer him a new contract to fend off interest, according to reports.

According to the Telegraph, Saints are prepared to offer a bumper deal to the right-back, who Brendan Rodgers sees as a replacement for Glen Johnson who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

The former Chelsea defender will be offered a new two-year deal but would have to accept his wages being halved – which he is not keen to do.

Clyne’s current deal will expire in 2016 with Southampton determined not to lose the player on the cheap with them hoping their fine form and impressive new manager Ronaldo Koeman will convince him to stay.

Clyne impressed for England with him appearing like a seasoned regular in the Three Lions shirt – only adding to his value.
