Wayne Rooney, 29, was boyhood idol of Man Utd team-mate Angel Di Maria, 26
Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney’s longevity has been neatly illustrated by team-mate Angel Di Maria.
The Argentina star has revealed he used to admire Rooney when he watched him during his school days, despite Rooney only being three years older than him.
He told the Daily Mail: “Playing with him is a pleasure and a point of pride. When I was 15, more or less, I used to watch him playing with United.
“I admired him and wanted to be like that. Whether it’s him, Giggs, or any of the others, playing with them is something really special.”
Bizarrely, that is mathematically correct. Despite the small age gap between them, Di Maria was still of school age by the time Rooney has burst onto the scene with Everton, made his England breakthrough, made his move to Manchester United and started scoring goals for them in the Champions League and Premier League.
And it sounds like playing with his unlikely boyhood idol has not been a disappointment.
He revealed: “Rooney is at the top level.
“The other day I was talking to my friend and I said, ‘Rooney and me understand each other, just like Messi and me in the Argentina squad, or Cristiano at Real Madrid’.
“I get on really well with Rooney, we get together on the pitch to kick the ball about, to do things. He’s a spectacular player and he’s one of the top players in the game.”
United fans will be hoping the pair continue to combine well in the coming months to secure a return to Champions League football.
