Saints boss Ronald Koeman fires warning to Man Utd boss Louis van Gaal
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has fired a warning shot to Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal after bullishly saying he will have a team who “can beat” the Red Devils.
The Saints have lost their last two games, against Manchester City and Arsenal, after an impressive start to the season and will face United with a depleted squad on Monday.
Jack Cork, Toby Alderweireld and Dusan Tadic have all joined Morgan Schneiderlin on the sidelines for the game.
But Koeman is adament his side can still beat Van Gaal’s men. “There will be a team next Monday who can beat Man United for sure,” he said.
“I think [Van Gaal] himself has enough injured players. He needs all things for his own team because they have a lot of injured players and now, little by little, we are also unlucky with injured players. We would like to be competitive until the end of the season.”
The Saints will also lose certain players in the New Year meaning the club are likely to strengthen in the transfer window. “There’s the Asia Cup in January for Yoshida and the Africa Cup of Nations for Saido Mane,” Koeman said.
“We spoke already with Les Reed [Southampton Head of Football Development] about this situation. We are looking and maybe with these kind of injuries you have to do something.”
