Krystian Bielik in Arsenal’s squad to face Man City
Arsenal will name new signing Krystian Bielik in their squad to face Manchester City tomorrow, manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed.
The 17-year-old midfield anchorman underwent a medical yesterday at the Gunners’ London Colney training base. Wenger is confident that his transfer from Polish outfit Legia Warsaw will be finalised ahead of tomorrow’s trip to the Etihad Stadium.
And despite dipping into the transfer market to sign another unestablished youngster, Wenger has revealed that he believes Bielik is good enough to go straight into his first-team squad.
He told the Mirror: “He’s a defensive midfielder, 6ft 2ins, he has a good energy level and technical level. Also, it’s a gamble. But on what we saw it’s worth taking.
“It’s less than £2m. It’s an awful lot of money for a player if he doesn’t succeed. If he does succeed then it’s cheap. Yes (he will go into first team squad).”
Bielik has been pursued by Arsenal over the last few months. He was reported to have made a trip to London before Christmas for talks and to watch the Boxing Day clash with Queens Park Rangers.
Late interest from German side Hamburg, who Bielik visited last weekend, threatened to derail the deal, but the youngster had always publicly declared that he wanted to sign for Arsenal.
With the Gunners lacking holding midfield players and with captain Mikel Arteta out for another three months, Bielik should get the chance to stake his claim to become a regular starter. The defensive midfield role is currently occupied by Mathieu Flamini, who has been criticised for his form this season, or Francis Coquelin, aged 23 and recalled from a loan spell at Charlton Athletic to provide some competition for Flamini.
Nonetheless, Bielik is unlikely to be named in the starting lineup against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
