Marseille powerless to stop Andre Ayew joining Spurs or Newcastle
French side Marseille can do nothing to stop Andre Ayew joining Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle United.
That’s according to a club insider quoted by French newspaper Le Parisien.
According to the But! website, the Marseille source told the paper: “It is absolutely right to expect to achieve a high level of pay. We will have a discussion with him, because he is very important to us. But we can’t do anything.”
Ayew’s future has inadvertently been framed within the context of the Premier League’s new bumper television rights deal.
The Ghana international, aged 25, is out of contract at the end of the season and has been linked with a move to England for some time. But the announcement of the amount of TV money available to the Premier League appears to have finally created an air of resignation at his current club.
Newcastle have been keen to sign Ayew for the past 12 months, while Spurs have been credited with interest more recently.
Ayew himself has indicated that he isn’t convinced Marseille will be able to meet his wage demands.
According to Le10Sport, he said: “L’OM has financial worries; they cannot pay certain wages. I am at L’OM, I can still be here tomorrow. In my head, everything is open. If I decide to go, I will. But I like OM.
“There will be a meeting soon. A pay cut to stay at L’OM? No, a player wants to progress in all aspects.”
