Chelsea and Man Utd ‘on alert’ as Sergio Busquets talks up Premier League move
Chelsea and Manchester United are both ‘on alert’ after Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets touted the idea of a move to the Premier League.
The Barca anchorman, aged 26, spoke of the prospect of growing tired with Spanish football and suggested a transfer to an English side could provide a welcome change of gear.
According to the Daily Express, both Chelsea and United have been boosted by the comments and would be prepared to pay £35m to land the Spain international.
Busquets is rumoured to be in contract talks at Camp Nou and insists he is happy to stay with Barcelona for now.
But those contract talks, which are likely to end with Busquets becoming one of the Catalan giants’ top earners, were reportedly fast-tracked amid fears that he could push for a transfer.
He told The Guardian: “I admire the Premier League for the quality and style of football. Maybe after years playing the same style you tire of it, and football there is very different.
“Stadiums are full, pitches are good, the press is different, people are different, the football culture is different. Everyone talks highly of England and I’d like to experience it one day.
“You see more space, more opportunity to enjoy your football. It’s more physical, more intense, but I think I’d be comfortable.
I can’t say I’ll definitely play there because things change and I’ve always said I want to stay here for many years, but I’d like the experience.”
Busquets is a one-club man in the professional ranks and has only ever played for Barcelona. He joined the club in 2005.
