French side Saint Etienne pay tribute to Liverpool over Hillsborough tragedy
French club Saint-Etienne have paid tribute to Liverpool over the Hillsborough tragedy after they unveiled a banner at their league game on Sunday.
The Ligue 1 side displayed a giant banner at one end behind the goal during their home match against Lille. “Hillsborough, 25 years of lies…Justice for the 96!” it read.
The banner was on show for the full 90 minutes of the 2-0 win for the home side.
Saint-Etienne’s banner is the latest in a string of memorials that have been unveiled at football grounds this season, with Everton recently also unveiling a plaque outside of Goodison Park before the Merseyside derby earlier this year.
The banner received widespread support from Liverpool fans on Twitter who have campaigned tirelessly for justice for those who died during the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.
The police have now accepted a cover-up over the tragedy and Saint Etienne seem keen to highlight this.
