Adam Lallana has been ruled out of the England squad after damaging his groin against Manchester United in the damaging defeat yesterday, Sky Sports report.

The Liverpool midfielder is undergoing tests today to assess the full extent of the injury but he is likely to be out for at least a fortnight with the strain.

Lallana was replaced by Steven Gerrard at half-time, who was sent off after just 40 seconds for stamping on Ander Herrera in the 2-1 defeat.

The former Southampton captain had predicted his side would beat United at Anfield yesterday, while also saying they would pip their great rivals to a top four finish.

But following yesterday’s miserable defeat that is looking increasingly unlikely with them now five points behind Louis van Gaal’s men.

Lallana is poised to become the latest player to withdraw from the England squad to face Lithuania and Italy, after Fraser Forster and Luke Shaw also withdrew.
