Dirk Kuyt advises Memphis Depay to pick Liverpool over Man Utd
Former Liverpool striker Dirk Kuyt has advised Memphis Depay to move to Anfield.
Netherlands international Depay, aged 21, appears to be in the middle of a tug of war between Liverpool and Manchester United.
His compatriot Kuyt has suggested that the PSV Eindhoven starlet should follow in his footsteps and move to Anfield.
Kuyt’s reasons are that Depay is more likely to play every week for Brendan Rodgers’ side and will only realise how big a club they are when he joins them.
But his advise does come with a big disclaimer.
He admitted to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf: “But I look through a red glasses, because I played six years for Liverpool.
“Only when Memphis does that, will he realise how big Liverpool are.
“Of course it would be an advantage at Manchester United that he knows the coach. On the other hand, it is important at his age that he plays every week – only that way he can develop by.”
Fellow ex-Liverpool man Boudewijn Zenden, who also played for PSV, also acknowledged that Depay’s relationship with United boss Louis van Gaal could be a decisive factor.
He told De Telegraaf: “Manchester United have the advantage for Depay that with Van Gaal he knows where he stands.
“That’s a very hot club with the most fans of England. But even there you have to watch what your prospects of playing are.”
Zenden also discussed how he chose to join Barcelona when he left PSV in 1998. He revealed that the opportunity to team up with Van Gaal at Camp Nou was one of the decisive factors in opting for the Catalan giants over a move to Italian side Inter Milan.
