Javi Manquillo leaves Liverpool
Right-back Javi Manquillo has left Liverpool after parent club Atletico Madrid accepted a request to terminate his loan deal, according to the Liverpool Echo.
The 21-year-old joined the Reds on a two-year loan deal last summer. But after starting the season competing for a first-team place, he quickly fell from favour and didn’t make a Premier League appearance in 2015.
An Atletico statement said Manquillo had “not enjoyed all the desirable minutes for his growth in football” and that he had been recalled by “mutual consent”.
The two-year deal could only be scrapped with the agreement of both clubs and the player, the report claims.
With Liverpool having strengthened at right-back with the recent signing of England international Nathaniel Clyne from Southampton, Manquillo’s prospects of making an impression on Brendan Rodgers’ plans did not look like improving anytime soon.
Speaking in May, Rodgers had claimed that Manquillo’s first season was about adapting and that he would work his way back into the team in his second season. But the Reds boss appears to have had a change of heart.
