Manchester United are now on the verge of landing Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, according to German tabloid Bild.

The report, which ends with the publication saying goodbye to Schweinsteiger and telling him that the Bundesliga will miss him, is adamant that the Germany international is about to sign for the Red Devils.

Former Bayern boss Louis van Gaal appears to have got his man – a situation that started to look increasingly likely when Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed that Schweinsteiger was flattered by United’s interest in signing him.

Rummenigge said that there would be further discussions when Schweinsteiger returned from his holiday, which he did on Friday.

Given the rapid progress and the reports that the transfer is now imminent, it appears the veteran midfielder confirmed he wanted to make the swtich.

The 30-year-old World Cup winner will reportedly sign a three-year contract worth €10m-a-year at Old Trafford.

United will also pay a transfer fee of between €18m and €20m to convince Bayern to part company with a player who first joined their youth ranks in 1998 and was under contract for another 12 months.
