Manchester United will entrust manager Louis van Gaal with a further €100m (£80m) in transfer spending this summer, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Despite widespread reports that the veteran coach will leave his job this summer and be replaced by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, today’s report suggests that Van Gaal will still be in charge next season to see out the final year of his three-season contract and that he will once again be backed in the transfer market in the forthcoming window.

A significant chunk of that kitty could be spent on securing the signing of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, the article claims.

Van Gaal has already spent £250m on new players since arriving at Old Trafford in July 2014. So far there has been little sign of a decent return on that investment.

The former Ajax and Barcelona boss is yet to win any silverware at United. Although he qualified for the Champions League at the first attempt with a fourth place finish, the Red Devils were knocked out in the group stage.
