One of the recurring themes of the FA Cup final has been referee Mark Clattenburg blowing his whistle too soon.
On three separate occasions the ref stopped played for a foul rather than allowing an advantage to develop. And on each occasion Crystal Palace were the victims.
The worst example came when Clattenburg stopped play to book Chris Smalling. Connor Wickham, who hadn’t heard the whistle, played on and put the ball into the net for a goal that was chalked off.
