Sevilla block Monchi’s Man Utd appointment
Manchester United have been thwarted in their initial attempt to land Sevilla sporting director Monchi after the Spanish side refused his request to leave the club for personal reasons, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
It is widely believed that the 47-year-old would immediately resurface at Old Trafford to lead United’s recruitment team, so Sevilla have pointed their employee towards the four-year contract he signed last year, which runs until June 2020.
A statement released by the Europa League winners claimed that Monchi had accepted their decision and had returned to work with the same professionalism he had always shown in his post.
But that looks like little more than a delaying tactic that will allow Sevilla to get the maximum financial return for Monchi’s departure.
He has a £3.8m buyout clause in his contract and, given their now high-profile pursuit of him, United look highly likely to activate that release clause in the coming days.
