Arsenal defender Calum Chambers is set to join Middlesbrough on a season-long loan deal, according to Sky Sports.

The England international, aged 21, joined the Gunners from Southampton in a £16m deal in 2014.

He made 23 Premier League appearances in his debut season at the Emirates Stadium and put in some assured displays, but his opportunities were restricted by the emergence of Hector Bellerin at right-back and the arrival of Brazilian centre-back Gabriel.

Chambers played in just 12 league games last season and has fallen behind summer signing Rob Holding, also aged 21, in Arsene Wenger’s pecking order. With Germany international Shkodran Mustafi set to join this week, his playing time looked set to reduce further.

But he could find himself as a first-team regular for Aitor Karanka’s Boro side.

The Premier League new boys have reportedly struck a deal to sign Chambers and the deal is now expected to be finalised before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.
