Czech newspaper offers San Marino cash prize for beating Slovenia
Tabloid offers pretty low reward for pretty impossible task
The Czech Republic recognises that its chances of qualifying for the World Cup are pretty bleak. They need to beat Northern Ireland tonight and hope that minnows San Marino can beat Slovenia to allow them to sneak into a play-off spot.
Czech newspaper Blesk is offering San Marino’s players one million crowns if they can pull off a miraculous win against Slovenia. But the reward isn’t as great as it might seem.
One million crowns is equivalent to about £36,000. And once that is split up among the squad, it is going to look like a pittance of a bonus for the match of your lives.
Straight-talking San Marino captain Andy Selva wouldn’t mind the money, but he is also a realist. He said: “We will do the maximum for a win but our biggest problem is that we rarely score a goal.”
And he ain’t kidding. They have scored one and conceded 44 in the qualifying campaign so far. Blesk’s accountants will probably not be sweating too much on this one!
