Rangers’ Maurice Edu suffers shambolic Champions League defeat, then racially abused by his own fans
A bad night for US star
Rangers midfielder Maurice Edu has revealed he was left hurt after being racially abused by supporters of his club. The USA international made the allegations via his Twitter account. He claimed he was subject to racist abuse while leaving Ibrox following the humiliating 1-4 defeat to Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni.
He wrote: “Not sure what hurt more: result last nite or being racially abused by couple of r own fans as I’m getting in my car…smh…off to rehab.” [sic]
It is not clear from Edu’s tweet whether the racist Rangers fans in question felt the need to abuse him on the basis of skin colour following the defeat or – arguably more embarrassing for them – didn’t recognise him as one of their ‘heroes’.
