World Cup referee caught smuggling heroin
Whistle…check, cards…check, bag of brown strapped to leg…check
The Italians may feel that justice has been done, but it would be fair to label the revelations as something of a shock.
Ecuadorean referee Byron Moreno, who was vilified during the 2002 World Cup by the Italian media and public after he sent of Francesco Totti in their defeat to South Korea, was arrested after attempting to smuggle ten pounds of heroin through JFK airport in New York.
Thankfully, Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon’s response was tongue-in-cheek as oppose to helpful: “I think Moreno already had the (heroin) in 2002, but not in his underwear, in his body.”
The referee has already been suspended for 20 games previously for adding 13 minutes of injury time in a game between LDU Quito and Barcelona Guayaquil.
