Is Martin Jol’s unique brand of fair play coming to Newcastle?
Dutchman quits Ajax, tipped for Toon
With Martin Jol quitting his post as manager of Ajax and now firm favourite to take over from Chris Hughton at Newcastle, OTP decided to relive the ex-Tottenham boss’s not-so-finest hour.
The TV microphones picked up Jol screaming “Play, play” as two Arsenal players were injured in the build-up to Robbie Keane’s goal in a 1-1 draw in a crucial North London derby in April 2006.
The incident was one of the few occasions fans have seen an act of aggression on par with Arsene Wenger’s recent bottle-hurling as he squared up to Jol. The Gunners manager later accused Jol of “lying” after the Dutchman denied encouraging his side to play on knowing Arsenal had players injured.
