Video: Diego Maradona plays a match in Chechnya, scores free-kick
And he still knows how to cheat
Chechnya is currently a place where even the wealthiest football figures in the world are enticed to turn up for a kickabout. Following a game against a Brazil XI in March, Chechnyan president Ramzan Kadyrov has now laid on a match against a World XI.
The World XI included Diego Maradona, Luis Figo, Fabien Barthez, Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler. The home team’s side starred President Kadyrov as striker. Perhaps unsurprisingly he managed to bag a hat-trick.
Maradona was on target with a free-kick, but also showed he still remembers how to dive!
Fowler was among those defending the all-star team against accusations that they were effectively helping a dictator in a propaganda war.
He said: “Politics aside, we are not here for that. We are here to play football, solely football.”
