Top 10 Gael Clichy replacements for Arsenal
Due to the constant speculation and rumors that Gael Clichy won’t renew his contract and will leave this summer, OTP has decided to help out Arsene Wenger with a list of possible Clichy replacements. These suggestions and possibilities are based on how heavily they’re linked to the Gunners and, of course, their ability and quality.
1. Aly Cissokho
Club: Olympique Lyon
A powerful left back, known for his physical capabilities and his constant forward bombardments, Cissokho is one of the most highly-rated full-backs in world football. He first caught the eye with memorable performances in the two-legged Champions League second round match against Manchester United while at Porto. He impressed up against Cristiano Ronaldo, who was given a hard time by the Frenchman.
Cissokho is now a France international and is wanted by Europe’s top clubs. He’s a quality player, who attacks with venom as well as being a more than capable defender who can hold his own against the best. Cissokho is more than ready to play in the big leagues and would cost more than £12 million.
2. Jose Enrique
A reliable player, Jose Enrique is being touted to leave Newcastle this summer and is interesting some of the Premier League big boys. He is known for his consistency, good crossing and able defending. Newcastle value him at £15 million but a bid of £8-10 million could secure his signature.
3. Leighton Baines
Definitely the most popular target among many Gooners, Baines has become one of the best left-backs in the league and has just completed what was undoubtedly his best season yet. A hard worker with a tremendous left foot for set-pieces and crosses, Baines is now becoming a regular fixture in the England squad. Everton would look for upwards of £12 million.
4. Maynor Figueroa
Club: Wigan Athletic
Renowned for his 60-yard wonder goal vs Stoke, Maynor Figueroa has long been admired by the top clubs. The Honduran is known for his solid defending, and, of course, the left foot that produced the aforementioned wonder goal.
5. Benoit Tremoulinas
This talented left back has been heavily touted to leave Bordeaux. Pacy Tremoulinas is best known as being the former supply line of Marouane Chamakh’s headed goals. A bid of around £10 million could allow Wenger to get the band back together.
6. Emilio Izaguirre
One of the best signings of the SPL season last term, Emilio Izaguirre has made a huge impact with Celtic, and has endeared himself to the fans with his exciting attacking play and great performances. He is known for his tireless running and posing a decent threat going forward. His defensive capabilities are perhaps slighly below some of those on this list, but he is an exciting player who would cost around £6 million.
7. Pablo Armero
A powerful wing back known for his excellent forward runs, Pablo Armero has had an outstanding season in Serie A. An integral part of the side that has qualified for the Champions League, Armero is now being linked with a move to a bigger club. has been linked and is interesting some of the best clubs in Europe, can also play equally as well as a left winger. He would probably cost around £5 million.
8. Federico Balzaretti
The dependable Italy international has been linked with moves to AC Milan among other big clubs. A consistent performer in Serie A, he is happy to bomb down the wind put is equally adept at defending against the Italian league’s top attackers. A bid of at least £7 million would be need to convince Palermo to sell.
9. Kieran Gibbs
Expected to be the future left-back for both the Gunners and England, Gibbs is a highly-rated candidate. His talent is not in doubt, but a spate of injuries has slowed his progress. Given his fitness issues and an inkling that he may eventually find a home as a left winger, promoting the youngster would be a risk.
10. Thomas Vermaelen
A pretty far-fetched option but one that has been voiced. With Wenger linked with a number of centre-backs, his current most solid defensive performer could be bumped along to full-back. He has played their before with previous club Ajax and is a solid option. Vermaelen has the pace, the defensive ability and the ability to drive forward but it is still unlikely Wenger would pursue this as a long-term solution.
What do you think? Are any of these targets good enough to replace Clichy or to be a Gunner? Is Gibbs ready to be a regular full back with the Gunners? Should Vermaelen be considered as an option?
